A More Aggressive Approach to Defense

With all the rule changes made in favor of the offenses in the NFL it is extremely hard to play defense. Defensive backs aren’t allowed to make any contact past five yards although most of the contact is initiated by the offensive player. Emphasis have been placed on getting to the quarterback because it’s hard to put together a good secondary to shut down passing attacks.  The basic defensive philosophies are to stop the run, prevent deep passes, and keep touchdowns off the board. With the emphasis on getting to the quarterback, coordinators have to be more creative in generating pressure.             Every team would love to have two bookend pass rushers like Von Miller and Demarcus Ware, but it doesn’t work that way. Pass rushers are at a premium and the chances of having two good ones is rare. Most teams have one good pass rusher and then some nice rotational players around him. Then you have the Cowboys, who have struggled to find that one legit pas

NFC East preview Dallas Cowboys 2017

No team in the NFL was more exciting in 2016 than the Dallas Cowboys. After losing, Tony Romo for the season in 2015, there really wasn’t any expectations for this Cowboys team in 2016. The 2016 season started off with another injury to Tony Romo and the spark of something that may be special.             The injury to Tony Romo may have been the best thing that has happened to the Cowboys since trading Herschel Walker. I never want to wish injury on anyone but if Romo wasn’t injured in that preseason game the Cowboys would have never noticed Dak Prescott in real game situations. He would have been a back up to Tony Romo for three years. The Cowboys would’ve drafted another player in the first round and Dak would be searching for another team to play for. Dak owes Tony Romo’s back for his opportunity to start for the Dallas Cowboys. He won’t owe any of his success to Tony Romo.             The Cowboys are lucky it played out the way it did. They could have Kellen Moore or

Player Highlight Bryon Jones

If the Dallas Cowboys want to have a top ten defense they will need to get solid contributions from these young players. This defense needs playmakers very much. Sean Lee is a legit playmaker and easily a top five linebacker in the league. That is where the buck stops. Outside of Lee this defense doesn’t have another player that offenses have to account for. That all must change this year, starting with Bryon Jones.             Bryon Jones was a combine monster in 2015. He set a record with is broad jump, ran a sub 4.40 forty-yard dash, and had a 40+ in vertical. His physical attributes are chart topping but his production isn’t. Jones has been a good safety in the Cowboys bend but don’t break defense. The scheme doesn’t really allow him to go off script and gamble because he has to back up the average corner backs that the Cowboys have.             This will be year three for Jones and the Cowboys need a big year from him. Through the first two seasons of his care

Training Camp Notes

Training camp has begun, marking the start of the NFL football season (in my opinion). Training camp is great because of the inside information that you receive about your favorite team. Make no mistake the reporter want readers so they will target one particular story over solid football information. Fans also get to hear about a player or positional group that they have concerns about.             My biggest concern for this Cowboys team is the young secondary. Youth doesn’t mean a player isn't talented. It does mean they’re inexperienced and can be taken advantage of. I don’t expect this secondary to be the “Legion Of Boom”, but I don’t want the unit being a liability to a defense that is already projected to be mediocre. If this secondary can be opportunistic at times, that will be a plus for the Cowboys. The pass rush should be better this season and if the secondary can hold up on the back end we may see the beginning of something special.             Camp

2017 Will be the year for this Defense

Training camp will be starting soon, and I can’t wait. Anything to get Kirk’s Cousin’s contract situation out of the headline news. I will take projections on fringe roster making, 7 th round picks. I would rather hear about the quarterback competition in San Francisco then to continue to watch and hear about how the Redskins have messed up again.             Let me move on. Training camp for the Dallas Cowboys will being July 24 th , and my interest in this team will only intensify. Last season was a coming out party, of sorts for some of the young talented players on this Dallas Cowboys roster. This year should be another coming out party for most of the players drafted in April. With expectations shy high for the Cowboys this year it would be great to see the defense come together before our eyes.             The Cowboys had a mediocre defense in 2016. They were top 5 in scoring defense but were middle of the road in every other statistical category. Many peo

Must See Matchup Dal vs Giants!!!!

Rivalries are a well-discussed topic when it comes to sports. Football has a ton of great rivalries, created for different reasons. We as fans sometimes create our own personal rivalries with a particular team. That can be because a friend likes a team you don’t, a girlfriend may be a fan of a different team than yours, or you just flat out hate another team. The Dallas Cowboys have many rivalries throughout the NFL. None bigger that the New York Giants.             The New York Giants reside in the NFC East along with the Cowboys. That automatically makes two teams rivals. Throw in the two recent super bowls, elimination from the playoffs on a numerous occasions, and some hard fight battles and you get one of the better rivalries in the league right now.             Week one of the 2017 regular season will be headlined by the Dallas Cowboys vs New York Giants and it will be must see TV! These two teams have met 4 times in the last 5 seasons on week one. The Co

Must see match-up Dal vs Falcons!!!

After winning the NFC East division in 2016 the Cowboys will be facing all the top teams in the NFC this year. My most interesting match up for 2017 is the game against the GreenBay Packers . Another match up that I’m really interesting in seeing is the game against the Atlanta Falcons!              Cowboys vs Falcons was the dream NFC Conference Championship game last season, but it didn’t materialize, thanks in part to Aaron Rodgers. Many fans wanted to see these two teams go at it for the chance to play in the super bowl. These were the top two seeds in the NFC, both teams have high powered offenses, and both of them had struggling defenses. I think it would have been a shootout worth watching. These two teams will get the chance to play each other in the regular season. No, the chance to play in the super bowl won’t be on the line, but playoff seeding will. Allow me to break down why this match up will be an interesting one.             First off the quarterbac

Watch out for the late Round Picks

There are many reasons to be excited about the Dallas Cowboys this upcoming season. The thing that has me most excited is the youth movement that the Cowboys have started. Young players are always a wildcard. They can be instant contributors to the team or they can struggle early in their careers and leave the team wondering if he is right for the system. You can also get players like Maliek Collins and Anthony Brown. These two players showed flashes but weren’t instant starters. It’s hard to accurately judge how good they are because they were used sparingly, despite having success last season. The one thing that they Cowboys have going for them is that they have had some good draft picks turn into solid starters. The Cowboys seem to be taking a page out of the Seahawks playbook!             In 2012, the Seattle Seahawks took Russell Wilson in the 3 rd round of the NFL draft. Wilson was considered a very good quarterback coming out of Wisconsin but he was undersized. The Seaha

Boys v Packers..... Must see 2017

Cowboys fans always expect the most of their team. Yes, we may be looking at our team through blue and silver colored glasses. Doesn’t change the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are one of the most talented teams in the NFL. The NFL network recently did their top one hundred player rankings (based on the players opinion), and the Cowboys had seven players on that list. If you do the math, the Cowboys accounted for 7% of the player on the list! Only one of those seven players came from the defensive side of the ball. That is also 32% of the Cowboys starting depth chart (22 players). It’s easy to see why the Cowboys fan base is so excited.           After a very successful 2016 season the expectations are, sky-high for this year’s Cowboys team. Dak and Zeke are going into their second season. The Cowboys had a very solid offseason, and they will be returning all the same players on the offensive side of the ball. This success has also garnered them the first place schedul

Cool it with the Dak Hate!

Can we all stop with the system quarterback argument when it comes to Dak Prescott! Most of the people spewing that stuff are the same people saying that Dak will fall back to earth. Stop it! Dak Prescott had one really good year. His success within the offense is the main reason that the Cowboys won 13 games and the NFC East division.             Yeah it was one season, and yeah he has some major talent surrounding him. But, just two seasons ago Matt Cassel, Brandon Weedon, and Kellen Moore weren’t able to have any success with this same team. In 2015 Tony Romo won the first two games of the season and those JAGS (Just A Guy) were only able to win two more games. The same exact team that won 4 games, was able to win 13 games in 2016 thanks to Dak Prescott. I’m not going to tell anyone that Dak is the next Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning. But he could be the next Ben Roethlisberger or Russell Wilson. Before I crown him anything, I’m going to need to see a lot more from hi
