After winning the NFC
East division in 2016 the Cowboys will be facing all the top teams in the NFC
this year. My most interesting match up for 2017 is the game against the GreenBay Packers. Another match up that I’m really interesting in seeing is the game
against the Atlanta Falcons!
Cowboys vs Falcons
was the dream NFC Conference Championship game last season, but it didn’t materialize,
thanks in part to Aaron Rodgers. Many fans wanted to see these two teams go at
it for the chance to play in the super bowl. These were the top two seeds in
the NFC, both teams have high powered offenses, and both of them had struggling
defenses. I think it would have been a shootout worth watching. These two teams
will get the chance to play each other in the regular season. No, the chance to
play in the super bowl won’t be on the line, but playoff seeding will. Allow me
to break down why this match up will be an interesting one.
First off the quarterbacks! Matt Ryan is coming off an
MVP season. He was amazing last year. I’m not one of the people that holds him
having Julio Jones against him. A good quarterback should have a great receiver
like Jones. Ryan led this team without a question. He was poised in the pocket.
He went through all his reads with precision. He was accurate with all his
passes. Most importantly, he protected the football. It’s already hard to stop
that offense, but when he isn’t turning the ball over, it almost impossible to
stop them. Before last year, I had Matt Ryan on the borderline of top 10
quarterbacks. He has been a good quarterback his entire career but he took it up
a notch last season. He has now cemented himself inside the top 10, but still
has some ways to go before he can be considered top 5, in my opinion.
Dak Prescott will be entering year two of his career. He showed
us that the stage isn’t to big for him, leading the Cowboys back against the
Packers in the playoffs. Dak gave us all a taste of what to expect this
upcoming season. If he can continue to protect the ball there is no doubt the
Cowboys will have a top five offense. With so much of the Cowboy’s success
hinging on the run game, Dak will have to keep making those timely plays. Both
these quarterbacks should have good seasons, but the running game might give
one of these teams the edge.
The Cowboys and Falcon both have two amazing running
games. Both teams ranked in the top five in yards per rush attempt and rushing
yards per game. The Falcon have a great running back tandem with Freeman and
Colman, while the Cowboys have Zeke Elliot shouldering the load. Hopefully one
of the Cowboys back up running backs show up this season and helps Zeke out.
With running games this potent, its hard to imagine what the passing games look
like. This matchup boast two the better wide receivers in the NFL as well.
Dez Bryant and Julio Jones are two of the top 5 wide
receivers in the NFL right now. Dez has battled injuries the last two season
while Julio has taken off and is being considered the best wide receiver in the
game right now. Regardless of how you view them, they’re both matchup
nightmares, and causes headaches for the defensive coordinator. It doesn’t stop
with just the two top receivers. The Falcons also have Mohamed Sanu and Taylor
Gabriel that can hurt you. Gabriel has explosive speed and kills in the slot.
Sanu is a solid route runner that is the perfect complement to Julio Jones.
The Cowboys have a solid receiving core too, highlighted
by one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game, Jason Witten. Cole
Beasley is a hand full in the slot, and Terrace Williams seems to make big
plays at times. From top to bottom, I think Atlanta has the better core group
of wide receivers but the Cowboys have some wild cards that might step up this
year and give them an edge.
Both these teams have mediocre defenses so I’m not going
into that. I hope the rookies for the Cowboys can step up and give them a solid
unit. The Falcons have some young players on the defensive side of the ball,
and they have a good pass rush. All in all, this game will be won on the
offensive side of the ball. It should be a shoot-out and I can’t wait to see
it.
