With the draft complete, now is a good time to try and make some sense of the Cowboys off-season. It's hard being an objective Cowboys fan because whenever u criticize this team other fans want to take your head off. As if this team has won a super in the last 20 years. Seeing Philly win the super bowl last season lite a fire under their ass, and it should have. The Cowboys had some clear points of emphasis that needed addressing this off-season. I believe they did a great job of addressing them. I am one of those Cowboys fans who believes losing Zeke for those 6 games derailed the Cowboys chances of making the playoffs. This teams plays differently when Zeke is on the field, and let's face it he is the Cowboys best offensive weapon. That's not a knock on Dak but Zeke forces teams to play the Cowboys differently. When free agency began the Cowboys took the wait and see approach. They waited till all the big name free agents fell. Then they waited for the high money guys to find places. Finally, they went and got some solid pieces that can make immediate impacts. After a quiet start to the free agency signing period, the Cowboys have had one of the best offseasons in the league. When the season ended the Cowboys had a ton of questions marks. How to get more production out the wide receiver position? What should they do with Demarcus Lawrence? Who will play left guard? How do they fill the shoes of Tyrann Smith if he continues to have back problems? The Cowboys were able to address all those questions in free agency and now enter the draft with the ability to add quality young players to their already young team.     The Dallas Cowboys inactivity in free agency is scaring their fans. I can't blame fans for being concerned. This team underperformed last season and failed to meet expectations. From a fans perspective, it appears they're content with bringing back the same team. This is making it extremely difficult to put a finger on what they may do in this upcoming draft. I've been preaching defense all off-season and would love for them to take that approach. The one thing I can say is that the Cowboys can’t afford to be safe in free agency and safe in the draft. The Cowboys need defense, defense and more defense! I feel like they should be taking a defensive player with their first three picks. The Dallas Cowboys have become a run first football team. Many people will say it's because Romo retired and Dak can't carry a team the way Romo did. I agree that Dak isn't Romo but he is plenty good enough to carry this Cowboys team. If we're being honest, much of Romo’s success came when the Cowboys were able to run the ball and control the clock.           If the Cowboys want to continue to have success running the ball and grinding down the clock they have to be able to stop other teams. They're going have to put a defense on the field that can hold opponents under 20 points a game. They've made strides in making the defense better. If you’ve been following my 2018 draft series then you should start to notice a common theme, Defense! The only way for the Cowboys to improve and finally be serious contenders for a super bowl is to bolster this mediocre defense. No more band-aids, quick fixes, or one-year rentals! The Cowboys need to make an all-out commitment to getting better on the defensive side of the ball and they need to do so this off-season. I agree with Cowboys nation that somethings have to change on the offensive side of the ball. I disagree that the Cowboys should address that issue in the draft. Taking a late round (after 3rd round) wide receiver or speed running back isn’t addressing a need on offense. That is adding a potential playmaker (toy) to the offensive side of the ball. I was talking with a buddy the other day and he asked me what I thought was the Cowboys biggest need. After seeing how the 2017 season play out it was hard not to mention offensive line or wide receiver. The Cowboys could use some depth at both those positions but that's all any player drafted this year would be, depth! I definitely think the Cowboys need more speed at the wide receiver position, but could that all be solved with a scat back? Tyron Smith missed a few games this year due to a bad back but does anyone believe that it’s time to give up on Tyrannosaurus?      For most football fans the NFL combine is a waste of viewing time. To be honest, with the way we're able to digest sports there really isn't a reason to watch the NFL combine coverage on NFL Network or ESPN. What the combine is to some football fans, is a time to see athletes compete for themselves. The Combine gives us something you can't see on Saturday and Sunday, selfishness! College athletes from all across the nation have a chance to put on workout clothes and outwork the guy next to them. They have the opportunity to one-up the next man for the sole purpose of saying “I'm stronger than you, or I'm faster than you.” I don't know about you but I think it's amazing TV.          The Combine is also the last time you get the chance to see these athletes compete for the job of a lifetime.
